Several years ago, I took out a book to learn to draw.
It was thick and big and written by an incredible smart artist. She was an academic in many ways, accomplished and very knowledgeable with research and years of teaching behind her.
I went through the book.
It was long. There was hours of reading.
Then hours of exercises.
Going through that book was more intense than some of the science and algebra courses I took preparing for nursing school!
It felt like an intense college level course without the help of the teacher or the encouragement of the students.
You can learn from an academic approach to drawing and painting – and that has its place.
Is that how you feel about taking on the hobby of painting?
It's something you want to do, but the process of starting feels intimating.
Secretly, you think it's going to take a lot of painful practice to get to the point of enjoyment.
Not only will it be a struggle, but the learning might also even be...boring?
I've got good news.
There is another way.
